What cookies are
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a site. They help the site remember your preferences, keep pages working, and measure aggregate usage. Some cookies are set by us, and some are set by third-party services we use.
For a politics site the practical effect is narrow. Cookies tell our servers that you have already answered the cookie prompt, that you prefer one reading width over another, and roughly how many people opened a piece about the 2026 midterms without telling us who those people are. They are not what identifies a source, and they are not what shapes which stories the newsroom covers.
A cookie is not a program. It cannot open a file on your device, and on its own it does not name you. Many browsers group cookies with other local storage such as site data and cached files. The controls described further down this page cover those, and the consent notice you saw already falls under this policy.
Cookies we use
-
Essential
Keep the site functioning and remember the cookie choices you have already made. The site cannot work properly without these.
-
Analytics
Show which pages are read and how visitors move through the site, reported in aggregate rather than per person.
-
Preference
Remember settings you choose, such as how you prefer to read longer explainers and policy breakdowns.
You decide what stays on your device. Everything below explains how.
Third-party cookies
Some features, such as embedded media or analytics, may set cookies from third parties. These providers have their own privacy and cookie policies, and we do not control their cookies. Where we can, we limit third-party services to those that respect standard privacy controls.
Embedded media
A clip or interactive graphic that we include from another service can set its own cookies when it loads or when you press play.
Analytics providers
These services count visits and reading patterns so we know which explainers land and which need a rewrite.
What we do not control
Their retention rules and settings sit with them. Their own privacy notices describe what they keep and for how long.
How to control cookies
You can set your browser to block or delete cookies. Most browsers let you manage cookies through their settings. Blocking essential cookies may affect how the site works. You can also opt out of non-essential cookies through the settings described on this page.
If you clear your browser data, your cookie choices are cleared with it, and the consent notice will ask again on your next visit. That is expected behaviour rather than a fault.
Where to make the change
-
Site cookie settings
Use the settings link in the consent notice to turn non-essential cookies on or off for gustrion.digital. Your choice is stored in an essential cookie, so turning that one off brings the notice back.
-
Your browser settings
Every major browser lets you view stored cookies, delete them one by one or all at once, and block future ones. Browsers also offer private or incognito windows, which discard cookies when you close the window.
-
Third-party opt-outs
For analytics and embedded media, the provider's own privacy page lists the opt-out it supports. Where a provider offers one, we link to it rather than describe a process it does not run.
-
Checking what is stored
Your browser's developer tools list every cookie a site has set, who set it, and when it expires. It is the quickest way to see the difference between our essential cookies and a provider's.
If a page behaves oddly after you change these settings, tell us which page and which browser you used, and we will look into it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the site or the law changes. The date at the top of this page reflects the latest revision. Continued use of the site after an update means you accept the revised policy.
When a revision changes which cookies we set, we will say so in plain language at the top of the page rather than only moving the date. If the change affects the consent choice you already made, the notice will ask you again.
